Summerland - True/False Art Project
Individuals will enter this oasis by passing through a “curtain of chaos.” This curtain will be similar in structure to a bead curtain that hangs in a doorway. Instead of beads, our curtain strands will be constructed of a number of different materials strung together and suspended on long pieces of thread from the branches of a large tree. These curtain strands will form a perimeter encircling the trunk of the tree, creating a barrier, something that must be passed through in order to reach the peaceful space within. By using a plethora of different materials for these curtain strands, we intend to represent how the uncertainty of life is intensified by the bombardment of information we face every day: social media posts, news reports, work and family obligations, relationships, etc. These things can all trigger feelings of uncertainty and stress, and all coexist and intertwine, constantly shifting and morphing as we navigate between life roles. This emotional flux will be personified as festival goers pass between the curtain strands, causing these to shift and morph as well. Weather conditions, the passage of time, birds, squirrels, and other creatures will also affect the curtain strands, representing change that is beyond our control.

WE NEED YOUR HELP
These strands will be assembled by attaching a variety of materials to lengths of cotton thread. Materials used for the strands will include natural and manmade items: shapes cut from paper, painted plastic water bottles, yarn pom-poms, knotted strips of fabric, sugar cubes, popcorn, and shapes cut from dried sheets of wheat paste. Materials used in the construction will have varying levels of degradability, therefore moving and changing as participants enter, exit, and spend time in the installation over the course of the festival. Some materials will break down and dissolve naturally when exposed to the elements, some perhaps will be eaten by animals.
These strands will be tied to dowel rods, allowing for ease of transport and onsite installation. Dowel rods will be attached to tree branches using duct tape, allowing the curtain strands to hang freely below.
We estimate approximately 500 individual strands will be needed to complete a perimeter curtain.
So we need your help with constructing these strands! There are three separate ways you can help, and we will have sign-up forms below for each of the three. ONE, would be volunteering to come make some strands here at Access Arts with some materials we will provide. TWO is volunteering to make strands from the comfort of your own home with your own materials. THREE is simply donating materials to us for those making strands here in our offices!
