Workshop
Improvisational Fiber Sculpture, a Community Project: May 26 1-3 pm
Register Here!
Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to create found object sculptures by applying various fiber art techniques (knotless netting, twining, binding, free weaving, etc.) to piano parts (piano keys, hammers, dampers, wooden kinetic mechanisms). The structure of the workshop will allow artists who have immediate inspiration on what to do with their selected objects and fibrous materials to dive in working, and will provide instruction in the various fiber art techniques and facilitation in the invention process. Workshop participants will leave with their new creations. Registration is required for this free workshop, space is limited.
In addition to this study in improvisational fiber sculpture workshop, music box paper scrolls and paper scroll hole punchers will be available. Participants are encouraged to create a random or planned composition of hole punches in these scrolls. After the exhibition closes, the music box scrolls will be arranged and attached by artist Erin King, recorded being fed through a music box, and shared on King’s SoundCloud account. As with King’s work within Necessary Tension, King will create her next body of work based on the composition generated by the community.
About the Artist
Erin King is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in fiber-based processes, drawing inspiration from the universal tenet within fibers - the basis for the Aristotelian concepts of holism, synergy, and gestalt - of smaller elements working together to create something stronger, and the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. King is driven by social responsibility in all aspects of her art practice, and believes in the arts' ability to build as well as model community. King's most recent body of work involves creating and displaying tapestry weavings on experimental looms made of parts from "piano dead bodies". King will receive her Master's of Fine Arts in Studio Art with an Emphasis in Fibers in May 2019. King received her Bachelor's of Art in Studio Art (emphasis in painting) as well as Advertising & Marketing Communications from Webster University - St. Louis in 2012.
