General Class information | Register here Each class meets for 2.5 hours each week for 6 weeks. Additional open studio time is available to all students enrolled in a 6-week class. The class fee includes 25 lbs of clay, glaze, and 2 firings. Additional clay may be purchased separately here. (If all classes are full, please join the waitlist! It lets us know if we would have enough interest to add another class!) Cost: $175 Beginning Wheel-throwing
This course is focused on the basic skills and techniques of throwing forms on a pottery wheel and developing an awareness of form. The class covers fundamental techniques of throwing bowls, cylindrical shapes, and plates. Demonstrations lead students through throwing these basic forms and basic glazing techniques. No prerequisites.
Mixed Level Wheel-throwing
This class is an opportunity for experienced clay students to get critical feedback on their work. A willingness to accept suggestions and embrace new techniques, philosophies, and approaches is recommended. Class time is spent on demonstrations, group discussions, and individual feedback. Students are expected to continue their classwork outside of the normal class time during available open studio hours throughout the session. The goal of the class is the individual evolution and improvement of each student.
Mixed Techniques and Surface Design Class
In this class, we will explore hand-building techniques while learning how to incorporate alternative wheel methods in our making. We will start the session making large slab-built serving ware. The bulk of our class will be spent creating a large-scale Classical sculpture (Greco-Roman). Finally, we will discuss surface design by utilizing tools such as colored slips and terra sigillata. If you enjoy hand-building this class is for you! If you want to expand your wheel-throwing perspectives this class is for you!
Tea Set **Canceled
This course is an intermediate, wheel-throwing class focused on making a full tea set. In this class, students will build on the skills learned from Lidded Vessels and Pouring Vessels. Students will make a tea set which will include: one teapot, one sugar jar, one creamer, four cups, and either four saucers or a tray. It is a prerequisite that students have taken beginning wheel throwing and one of the two Intermediate classes previously offered; Lidded Vessels or Pouring Vessels. This course is the last of a three-part set of intermediate classes accumulating in the technically challenging tea set. **A prerequisite of at least one wheel-throwing class and either the Lidded Vessels or Pouring Vessels class is required.
Gas Kilns and Atmospheric Firing **Canceled
Students unaware of the firing process may find some disconnection between the lovingly crafted piece placed upon a shelf and a piece utterly transformed by methods outside of their control or knowledge received back some time later; the goal of this course is to help bridge the gap between making and firing. Over the course of six weeks, students will learn the basics of gas, salt, soda and wood firing methods; measuring temperature with pyrometric cones, oxidation and reduction atmospheres, cone 10 glazes, mapping kiln temperature and surface decoration that reacts to kiln atmosphere. Outside of lessons, students will complete a few small projects but will most often be making work in their own style and voice with optional guidance from instructor. The course will culminate in the students being able to combine these concepts and their knowledge of making work in an observed firing of the Access Arts gas kiln with the option of helping to load and unload the kiln. This is an intermediate course and students should feel somewhat comfortable making work through their preferred methods (throwing/handbuilding)
Wood Firing Class
This course is an intermediate, wheel-throwing, or hand-building course focused on making objects for the Summer 2022 Wood Fire kiln. Students will be working on independent projects (functional vessels, sculptures, etc.) while the instructor gives a weekly, 20-minute lecture on different aspects of a wood firing. As part of this class, students will be expected to help prepare the kiln site for the two-day firing (including but not limited to: moving wood, scraping shelves, staffing a 6-hour firing shift, wadding pots, and other duties).
